Case Study – Hairdressing Apprentice

Hairdressing Apprentice Samuel Thorpe from ExeterRichard Beaumont Hair

Learner: Samuel Thorpe
Employer: Richard Beaumont & Longbrook Salon
Qualification: Hairdressing and Barbering Level 3

Before taking on the apprenticeships in Hairdressing and Barbering Level 2 at Richard Beaumont & Longbrook Salon in Exeter, Sam went to the West Exe Community College.
This work-place focused training has been great in developing both, his skills and confidence. Sam says working with his Assessor has been excellent. She has identified his strengths and weaknesses and has focused his training accordingly, and was fun to work with. He could improve his customer service skills, teamwork and he prefers this environment to classrooms and can work at his own speed.

Samuel’s statement about this apprenticeship

“I started at the Longbrook Salon as a voluntary help leading up to a very busy Christmas period making teas & coffees and tidying up. During this time, I realised I would very much like to be a hairstylist.

After an Interview with Richard and going through all the details of job descriptions, the highs and the lows, I commenced my employment. Richard decided to enrol me with Acacia for my apprenticeship. I was slightly anxious at this point as many of my friends at that time were at Exeter College. However, I quickly realised the individual training I was receiving from Acacia was second to none, along with the training I received from James and Richard Beaumont in the salon.

At all times Richard sees the potential in an individual and participates in bringing the best out of you. My confidence grew very quickly. I have always felt appreciated and an important member of the team. Working with Richard is a pleasure as his knowledge of hairdressing has enabled me to grow as a person and develop my skills. I continue my training with Acacia training and now I’m doing my level 3. I am very lucky that I enjoy what I do, this is because Richard saw I had potential and worked along with me all the way and continues to do so.”

Sam has especially benefitted from his continuous training supported through the salon and his family. He is already a strong member of staff; this has been through the time and support that a very busy experienced business has been able to provide.
