Employer of the Month in May 2016: Pat Knell from Torcare, Torpoint

Pat Knell achieved our prestigious Acacia Training and Development award of the month in May 2016. Jan Mearns, Health and Social Care Internal Quality Assurer at Acacia Training and Development, tells us why.

Pat Knell is based at Torcare in Torpoint, Plymouth and has been a work-based assessor for many years working alongside Acacia assessors (for more than 20 years). She has worked with learners in her workplace on Health and Social Care apprenticeship programmes in order to make sure that all learners achieve the best standard they can. Pat says: “Any training gives empowerment and knowledge to individuals. It has helped our company to have well-trained staff.”

Jan says: “She assists Acacia assessors by completing optional units to their award. Since December 2015 Pat has supported a Level 3 apprentice all by herself due to our Acacia assessor retiring which is remarkable.”

Pat has also been fighting a personal battle this year – cancer. However, this has not deterred her from assisting this apprentice achieving her goal. Jan adds: “Pat has worked with this learner whilst undergoing surgery and chemotherapy/ radiation treatments. The learner is on target to achieve her apprenticeship next month. Pat is just an amazing person and no matter what happens, she is always there to support the learners and her staff.”

Pat says: “I am very happy to receive this award. I just love what I am doing and want to help young people achieve their goals and do a good job at what they love. I certainly love what I am doing. My illness has only made me stronger and made me realise what is really important in life.”
